Using the centuries-old method of pure vegetable tanning and hand finishing, the single tannery still producing genuine shell cordovan today is indeed practicing a rare art. The tanning process takes a full six months to complete and produces leather that is soft and supple, yet very durable. Every Alden New England shoe carries a tempered steel shank, precisely contoured and triple ribbed for extra strength. Every Alden New England shoe has full leather lining chosen from a special stock of supple glove linings and smooth glazed linings. They appear to have recently been resoled (and welted), and only worn once afterward. The uppers are in very good condition, but there are some limited instances of cracking at pressure points near the throat of the shoe (see picture). That said, they appear to be stable. I cleaned these shoes, inside and out, with Weimans Leather Wipes and Weimans Leather Conditioner, deep cleaned and conditioned with Lexol Cleaner and Conditioner, deep conditioned with Saphir Médaille d'Or Lotion, and polished them with Saphir Médaille d'Or Cordovan Shoe Cream.
