Alden high vamp (tall instep) penny loafers on the Grant last in color 8 shell cordovan, with standard oak leather sole and increasingly scarce hand-sewn pie crust pattern on the vamp. This model # is a retailer-exclusive makeup for Alden Madison in New York City, made in limited production batches, priced at $990. This model is highly coveted for its tall (in elevation) and generous instep room by Alden LHS enthusiasts who are unable to achieve a comfortable fit on the standard-production 986 LHS on the Van last, due to the 986's low and tight strap across the instep. The handwriting on the interior lining indicates this pair was manufactured in June 2025. I purchased it as factory seconds from TSM in March 2026. Tried on once, without any crease lines on the vamp. Unfortunately it is a half size too long for me. Shame, as this is the nearest to a cosmetically flawless pair of factory seconds that I've ever seen from Alden. Although it is still eligible for return for TSM, I'm listing here for inventory access to international buyers, for whom the risk of buying factory seconds sight-unseen with import fees can otherwise prove too risky a gamble. For U.S. buyers - you'll have the option of buying directly from TSM in April, as I intend on returning it if this doesn't sell before end of March. TSM has raised factory seconds pricing on most hand sewn vamp models (like the 986 and 987) to $699 as part of this year's annual price increase. Please trust my intent is not to make a profit by flipping this relatively rare model with hand sewn vamp, but rather to merely break-even after covering eBay's platform fees and shipping insurance whilst making this pair accessible to Alden fans across the world. Cosmetic imperfections on this pair:
(1) On the right shoe, there is a mm of excess thread sticking out from the very end of the pie crust pattern on the vamp, near the penny strap. See blue markup circles on photo 17
(2) Horizontal abrasion on the shell cordovan uppers at the base of the heel counter, just above where the upper meets the welt. Photo 18.
(3) Color 8 dye bleeding into the interior lining of the right shoe (photo 19), and to a very small extent onto the leather outsole of the right shoe. The lasting, leather clicking, symmetry of the hand sewn vamp curvature between the left shoe and right shoe, and sole edges are all immaculate. The pair is the closest I've seen to a flawless pair of factory seconds, and better than some first-quality pairs sold at retail list price. Ships with white factory seconds box originally mated to this pair, and a pair of Tricker's branded navy shoe bags. I also have an unused pair of burgundy Allen Edmonds branded shoe bags which I can substitute in place of the Tricker's; just message me within an hour of purchase if you have a strong preference on which complementary shoe bag option you prefer, before I ship. The Grant last fits bigger than Aberdeen, and smaller than Van. A couple Alden retailers' websites lists it as a 1/4 size in-between those lasts. For those who don't have experience with Grant last loafers in shell cordovan, I'm including my sizes in other lasts below. I'm size 9.5 E Brannock, with narrow heels and high instep.
- Alden barrie: 9 D calf (slightly too roomy), 8.5 D cordovan (slightly too tight around toes)
- Alden grant: 9 D cordovan boots (slightly too tight at ball)
- Alden hampton: 9 D calf, comfy in toebox and good arch length fit, but tight at instep
- Alden trubalance: 8.5 D in cordovan, chromexcel, and reverse chamois
- Alden aberdeen: 8.5 E for cordovan loafers, or 9 E for calf and lace ups and suede loafers. Aberdeen is generally not a good last for me, due to its infamously narrow toebox, low instep, and cavernous heel cup
- Alden modified: 8.5 D in cordovan and suede. 8.5 E in calf.
- Alden van: 8.5 E in cordovan, 9 D in unlined suede. Comfy toe box width, but uncomfortable at instep
- Allen Edmonds 65: 10 D US in all leathers. Good toebox width, but bad instep fit, resulting in wide V gaps on oxford lace-up
- Allen Edmonds 201: 10 D, much more comfortable around instep than 65 last
- Carmina soller: 8.5 UK cordovan
- Carmina xim: 8.5 UK calf (slightly too tight)
- Carmina inca: 8.5 UK suede
- Carmina rain: 9 UK calf
- Carmina mateu: 9 UK standard width (single E) in shell, and in Albaladejo collection suede, 8.5 UK in standard suede
- Carlos Santos 234: 8.5 UK
- Crockett & Jones 314: 8.5 UK, unlined cordovan loafers
- Crockett & Jones 325: 8.5 UK suede derbies. Heel is too wide, thus feet tend to slip forward resulting in tightness at pink toe
- Crockett & Jones 341: 8.5 UK calf oxfords
- Crockett & Jones 376: 8.5 UK, unlined suede loafers
- Crockett & Jones 378: 8.5 UK
- Crockett & Jones 393: 8.5 UK, suede Riviera lined loafers
- Gaziano & Girling mh71: 9 E UK. Superb fit.
- New Balance 990 v4: 10 D US. Too roomy at heel and lacking in arch support
- Nike Pegasus 41: 11 D US. Slightly too long, but achieves proper arch length. 10.5 was too tight at ball
- Tricker's 11659: 8.5 UK cutter cowhide loafer. Good on instep room, slightly tight across toes, ample room at heel. - Tricker's 2161: 8.5 UK cutter cowhide chukka
- Tricker's 4497s: 8.5 UK calf. Outstanding instep room & comfort for a boot. Roomy around heel and ankles.
- Saint Crispin's classic: 9 G UK personalized last with instep additions and heel reduction. Sightly roomy. Please feel welcome and encouraged to message with me any questions on the shoe's condition or sizing advice. Alfista88 on styleforum. No returns. Thank you for your consideration, and wishing all enthusiasts good luck on your eBay treasure hunts for welted footwear!
