Alden ravello shell cordovan tassel loafers, constructed on Aberdeen last in size 8.5 E (wide). This makeup eschews the modern trend toward antique sole edges or high-contrast stitch colors, through its muted utilization of dark brown threads on the vamp stitching and discrete black sole edge. That deliberate absence of any loud, contrasting accents enables the captivating natural beauty of ravello shell cordovan to shine center-stage as the main showpiece of this makeup.
The interior lining indicates this pair was manufactured in December 2023. I purchased it from an Alden retailer in 2025, and have worn it less than 5 times, exclusively indoors, while working from home. The single oak leather outsoles are in near pristine condition (see photo # 4).
This pair has not had any shoecare products applied to it (not even venetian shoe cream or Alden's cordovan leather defender spray), only been brushed with Alden's OEM horsehair brush. My local cobbler used a small gavel hammer on each of the clinch nails on the heel, so that each of the nail heads are securely recessed deep into the heel and no longer pose any risk to scratching up hardwood floors.
Ships double-boxed, with an outer cardboard box protecting the original green Alden shoe box mated to this pair. Includes Alden branded cloth shoe bags.
Sizing considerations: the Aberdeen last is notoriously narrow in the toe box, and wide at the heel. However, the E width on this pair provides the comfort of added space in the toebox, and also alleviates tightness at the instep. I ordinarily experience instep discomfort and redness when taking D widths in Aberdeen and Van loafers, but my high instep is perfectly comfortable on this pair of 8.5E tassel loafers.
In case it's helpful for potential buyers for this listing, or as general consumer advice, I am 9.5 E brannock with the following sizing across manufacturer lasts.
- Alden barrie: 9 D calf (slightly too roomy), 8.5 D shell (slightly too tight around toes)
- Alden hampton: 9 D calf, comfy in toebox and good arch length fit, but tight at instep
- Alden trubalance: 8.5 D in calf, cordovan, and chromexcel. No experience with suede or chamois.
- Alden aberdeen: 8.5 E for cordovan loafers, or 9 E for calf and lace ups and suede loafers. Aberdeen is generally not a good last for me, due to its infamously narrow toebox, low instep, and cavernous heel cup
- Alden van: 8.5 E in cordovan, 9 D in unlined suede. Comfy toe box width, but uncomfortable at instep
- Allen Edmonds 65: 10 D US in all leathers. Good toebox width, but bad instep fit, resulting in wide V gaps on oxford lace-up
- Allen Edmonds 201: 10D, much more comfortable around instep than 65 last
- Carmina soller: 8.5 UK cordovan
- Carmina xim: 8.5 UK calf
- Carmina rain: 9 UK calf
- Carlos Santos 234: 8.5 UK
- Crockett & Jones 314: 8 E UK, unlined cordovan loafers
- Crockett & Jones 341: 8.5 UK calf
- Gaziano & Girling mh71: 9 E UK. Superb fit.
- New Balance 990 v4: 10 D US.
- Nike Pegasus 41: 11 D US. Slightly too long, but achieves proper arch length. 10.5 was too tight at ball
- Saint Crispin's classic: 9 G UK personalized last with instep additions and heel reduction. Sightly roomy.
