Rare Alden 912 U Throat Balmoral Plain Toe Lace-Up - Black Calfskin Dress Shoes - Barrie 9.5 B/D Barrie Last (runs 1/2 size larger) Single Leather Outsole Super comfortable MSRP @ $640 This model is rare to stumble across.  It is essentially a whole-cut, meaning it is pieced together with a single leather outsole that is joined at the rear, with a hand-sewn U-throat for the lace-up closure.  I've only seen these at Shoemart and can't remember seeing one out of captivity on the feet of a passerby. Accordingly, as I was curious, this was purchased as an irregular from Shoemart in Norwalk CT (together with another that I occasionally wear).  If you look at the soles in several of the pictures you can see the associated stamped R in a circle over the Alden branding logo on the sole.   This is how Alden indicates the few shoes it allows to be distributed with defects. I recall looking over the shoe with one of the brothers, examining the shoe for the blemish that caused Alden's quality department to set them aside.  Rest assured that Alden's irregulars are still pretty darn fine, and it would not allow any shoe to ship if it there was a cause for concern about its quality or a risk to its reputation.   There are several surface flaws on the uppers, which probably accounts for why Alden quality control set them aside.  These can be seen in the pictures.  Note the most visible one just above the heel in the final picture.  Modest but still enough to keep this pair out of the first-production category.   Domestic U.S. shipments only.  Tracking number for shipment will be provided.  Payment must be received within 3 days of auction ending.
