History of the Alden 986 Alden 986 Color 8 loafers use the centuries-old method of hand finishing and pure vegetable tanning, making them quite the pick for footwear. The single tannery still making genuine shell cordovan today is indeed practicing a rare art, as it takes six months to complete and creates leather that is soft, supple, yet very durable. Another hallmark of this shoe is the Goodyear welt, which stitches the insole to the shoe's upper part for added durability and quality. Alden 986 leisure handsewn loafers carry a tempered steel shank, which is triple ribbed and precisely contoured for extra strength, and full leather lining from a special stock of supple glove and smooth glazed linings. The shank is truly the backbone of a fine welt shoe or boot. It delivers the support and shape you need for comfort throughout the day. Oak-tanned leather bends are cut into outsoles at the factory for maximum quality control.  These shoes do show signs of wear as shown in the photos, however the Horween Shell Cordovan Color 8 leather has aged like fine wine and the soles have much life left.
